The current pandemic cannot stop the upcoming 2022 elections – this, according to Commission on Elections (COMELEC) Spokesman James Jimenez. Jimenez made the statement on his Twitter account, @JabJimenez as a reply to an inquiry asking if the poll body can justify the cancellation in light of what happened to India. It may be recalled that a serious outbreak occurred in India attributed to its ongoing election.
“Comelec can suspend elections or declare failure of elections when it becomes impossible to hold free and fair elections,” Jimenez tweeted. Read more: Not even pandemic can stop 2022 polls – Comelec, an article by PhilStar.
Jimenez stressed that COMELEC can only suspend or declare failure of election if precincts are destroyed or rendered useless. Jimenez adds, “no cancellation justified of only (due to) fear.”
To date, the 2022 election is a year and eight days away.
