What is Cybersecurity and Why is it Important?

Cybersecurity: changing times call for changing measures. Physical walls are no longer enough to keep threats at bay. In a time when everything becomes digital, it is important to invest in cybersecurity. Why? In a report by RiskBased Security, it revealed that 7.9 billion records have been exposed by data breaches in the first nine months of 2019. According to the report, the number doubled from the records exposed in 2018. Moreover, the International Data Corporation predicted that the worldwide expenditure on cybersecurity solutions will reach USD 133.7 in 2022.

Here, we explore the world of cybersecurity and why it is important in today’s time.

Renowned antivirus company Kapersky defines ‘cybersecurity’ as ‘the practice of defending computers, servers, mobile devices, electronic systems, networks, and data from malicious attacks. It’s also known as information technology security or electronic information security’. The brand also adds that the term applies in a variety of contexts, from business to mobile computing, and can be divided into a few common categories. Read more: What is Cyber Security? The digital world is as scary as the real world

Cyber threats, in the same Kapersky article, enumerated the types of cyberthreats – cybercrime, cyber-attack, and cyber-terrorism. Cybercrime includes individuals or group targeting systems for financial gain or disruption. Cyber-attack, meanwhile, includes information gathering that is politically motivated. And cyber-terrorism intends to spread panic and chaos via electronic systems.

Types of cyberthreats include malware (virus, trojans, spyware, ransomware, adware, botnets), SQL injection, phishing, man-in-the-middle attack, denial-of-service attack, and more. Cyber threats have even spawned new threats, this includes dridex malware, romance scams, and emotet malware.

Why is cybersecurity important though

In an article by UpGuard, cybersecurity is important because ‘it encompasses everything that pertains to protecting our sensitive data, personally identifiable information (PII), protected health information (PHI), personal information, intellectual property, data, and governmental and industry information systems from theft and damage attempted by criminals and adversaries.’ Read more: Why is Cybersecurity Important? Kapersky advises users to protect themselves against cyber-attacks via the following: updating software and operating system; using anti-virus software; use strong passwords; not opening email attachments from unknown senders; not clicking links from unknown senders; and avoid using unsecure WiFi networks in public places.
