The Iloilo City Government, on a Facebook page, recently shared an excerpt of Republic Act No 6155, an act declaring December 18, of each year, an official public holiday in the city and in the province to commemorate the birth anniversary of Graciano Lopez Jaena.
The act states, “to commemorate the birth anniversary of our national hero Graciano Lopez Jaena, the eighteenth day of December of each year is hereby declared an official public holiday in the City and Province of Iloilo.” The legislation was enacted in November 1970.
Graciano Lopez Jaena, an Ilonggo, was a Filipino journalist, orator, revolutionary, and national hero known for his publication, La Solidaridad. Historians regarding Jaena, along with Marcelo del Pilar and Jose Rizal, as the triumvirate of Filipino propagandists. Jaena advocated for the reform of the Spanish colony in the Philippines which eventually led to the Philippine Revolution in 1896.
