Php 35M Evacuation Center to Rise in Iloilo City: The Office of Civil Defense recently announced that a Php 35 million regional evacuation center will be constructed on the southern side of Iloilo City. The facility will rise in Barangay Tacas in Jaro, and the city government has allowed the Office of Civil Defense to use the city’s 5,000 square meter property.
The structure will serve as an evacuation center and regional depot/warehouse.
“We are very happy to enter into this partnership. During calamities or kis-a may dako nga sunog or baha, this facility will be readily available. But indi lang ang taga-syudad makagamit kondi bilog nga rehiyon,” states Iloilo City Mayor Jerry P. Treňas in an article by Panay News. The city mayor has recently signed a Usufruct Agreement with the Office of Civil Defense Region VI Director Jose Roberto Nuňez.
The soon-to-rise evacuation center will be able to house 530 families. Moreover, non-food items will be kept inside the facility for relief operations by the Department of Social Welfare and Development. The facility will be the 13th in the whole of Western Visayas.
Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzaga stated that evacuation centers are necessary, as natural disasters are a possibility due to the current climate change / global warming.
The Office of Civil Defense also shared that the evacuation center will include the following: an accommodation building with beds, infirmary and pharmacy, separate toilets and bathrooms, laundry and drying facility, power generator and pump room, garbage disposal building, and storage room.
