Health Secretary Francisco Duque III recently shared that he will go ‘soul searching’ amid the current global health crisis – he revealed during the Senate hearing last August 18.

“I took full responsibility for my decisions and actions. I’m trying my best. If my best is not enough, I just have to do some reflection, soul searching and I will be the first to let everyone know we need to learn,” states Health Secretary Francisco Duque III.

It may be recalled that the health secretary has been tagged in the issue of corruption at the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation. In addition, he has been grilled by the Senate regarding the country’s response to the global pandemic. However, amid accusations, Duque still has the trust and confident of President Rodrigo Duterte.

Duque then stated to the Senate Committee of the Whole that he will go ‘soul searching’ to reflect on his actions and decision regarding the current pandemic and the rising number of positive cases in the country. He also reiterated that the Department of Health has been solely relying on the World Health Organization pronouncements in the fight against COVID.

Duque Tagged as Godfather of PhilHealth Mafia

It was former PhilHealth Anti-Fraud Officer Thorrsson Keith who accused Duque as being the ‘godfather’ of the heavy corruption happening within PhilHealth. Keith also revealed that the so called ‘mafia’ is composed of the agency’s executive committee and have, so far, pocketed Php 15 billion.

“Doon po sa Interim Reimbursement Mechanism, siya po ang chairman. As a chairman mayroon pong due diligence po na gagawin ang isang chairman and considering na he’s a doctor and mayroon siyang institutional knowledge sa pamamalakad sa PhilHealth,” states former PhilHealth Anti-Fraud Officer Thorrsson Keith.
