How to Register SIM Card in the Philippines

How to Register SIM Card in the Philippines: The SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) Registration Act, specifically Republic Act No. 11934, was signed into law last October 10 and mandates the registration of SIM Cards. The law takes effect today, December 27.

In an article by the Inquirer, Officer in Charge of the Office of the Press Secretary Cheloy Garafil states that the Act will provide “accountability in the use of SIM Cards and aid law enforcers to track perpetrators of crimes committed through phones.” It will also “significantly boost government initiatives against scams committed through text and online messages, which have become more prevalent.”

The Act also highlights the following:

Telco companies and direct sellers to ask for valid identification documents prior to selling SIM cards. Moreover, registering with false or fictitious information, using fictitious identities, or carrying out fraudulent activities will be subject to respective penalties. In case of a subpoena or court order, telcos must provide identification of the SIM Card owner.

In addition, persons with existing SIM Cards need to register with telcos within a time frame. SIM Cards will be deactivated if not registered. Subscriber SIM Cards will be kept on file by telecommunication companies. A list of authorized dealers and agents nationwide must be submitted to the National Telecommunications Commission by companies on a quarterly basis.
