The Iloilo City Government has recently hired thirty ‘green guards’ to secure the Iloilo River Esplanade and public plazas against vandals. This is in response to the recent destruction of property along Diversion Road.
“Their primary duty is to protect most especially ornamental plants. They patrol their areas. They bring with them citation tickets,” states Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treňas, in an article by Panay News.
The ‘green guards’ underwent a paralegal seminar workshop on anti littering by the City Environment and Natural Resources Office, and authorized to arrest vandals. It can be recalled that the City Mayor has offered Php 50,000 reward for those who can provide information about the recent destruction of palm trees.
