Iloilo Legislative Districts: The House of Representatives has recently approved House Bill 8477, an ‘Act Reapportioning the Lone Legislative District of the City of Iloilo’ on its third and final reading. The bill, filed by Rep. Julienne ‘Jam Jam’ Baronda, aims to add another legislative district to aid in the growth and development of the metro.
The bill was initiated by Raul Gonzalez Jr, former congressman.
“Our dream of leveling up and becoming an even greater metropolis got a fresh boost. We continued what they started, and we are fortunate to have successfully received support from our esteemed colleagues,” states Baronda (statement taken from an article by Panay News). The bill is set to group Jaro, La Paz, and Mandurriao as the first legislative district, and City Proper, Molo, Arevalo, and Lapuz as the second legislative district.
Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas welcomed the initiative.
“I welcomed the said bill since it is long overdue. The creation of another district will mean another congressperson who will be able to provide more projects, financial assistance, scholarships and other services to the Ilonggos. The city has already developed so much that we can accommodate another congressional district. Our constituents will benefit a lot with this development,”Treñas states.
