My City My SM My Art Launched at SM City Iloilo

SM City Iloilo recently launched My City My SM My Art last Wednesday, 11th of January 2017, at the Event Center of SM City Iloilo. My City My SM My Art is a celebration of Philippine Visual Arts featuring the works of Ed Defensor, Harry Mark Gonzales, PG Zoluaga, Martin Genodepa, Kris Brasileňo, Kat Malazarte, Alex Ordoyo, Marzz Capanang, Jeline Laporga, Mia Reyes, Jeanroll Ejar, Cezar Arro, and Vic Fario.

The launch aims to bridge art and people together by showcasing the works of masters, modernist and millenials in a roadshow around the SM Supermalls – advocating art for all. SM is also working with communities to mount exhibits, workshops, and contests in key cities in the Philippines.

“Iloilo is a junction over which Malay, Spanish, Chinese, and American cultures have met in the course of centuries. This stretches back to a rich pre-colonial culture, and the arrival of settlers, the Malayans sometime in May 1212. It is this multi-cultural milieu that Ilonggo artists have found their true ‘voices, expressed in their respective styles.” – excerpts from The Iloilo Art Scene, My SM My SM My Art

The Iloilo art scene reveals the passion of Ilonggo artists to pursue visual and mixed media art – as most of them were self taught due to the absence of fine arts courses in the province. On the other hand, the void was filled by the group Hubon Madiaas, which served as the prime mover of cultural activities in Panay.

“With that, Ilonggo artists are products of the admixture of natural endowment in art, presence of cultural activities to participate, challenge of peers and a courageous resolve to continue their art regardless of the lack of patronage by the public in general.” – excerpts from The Iloilo Art Scene, My SM My SM My Art

As of date, many local schools are opening courses in the arts – making Iloilo a rich haven for the community of Ilonggo masters and aspiring artists. Iloilo has been considered as the second best next to the National Capital Region in terms of visual arts maturity and development based on the National Commission on Culture and the Arts survey. Furthermore, the City of Love is on its way to becoming a viable center for contemporary art.

My City My SM My Art exihibit will run from January 11 to 23, 2017.

    1. Hello Juan,

Thank you for your comment. I actually owe it to the organizers of the My City My SM My Art event. They have a thorough recollection of the Ilonggo Art Scene through the years. Catch their exhibit at the Event Center (Lower Ground floor) of SM City Iloilo, until January 23rd. Again, thank you for your comment. Have a lovely week ahead!

      Best regards,

      Andrea
