Just recently, a ‘nationwide shopping festival’ is set to happen in March to improve domestic spending, according to the Department of Tourism Undersecretary Arturo Boncato. Moreover, yearlong seat sales, hotel discounts, and temporary waiving of travel taxes are also being considered to encourage tourists to travel to the Philippines. This is to cope with the losses incurred due to the recent novel coronavirus scare. The Philippine tourism lost about Php 14.8 billion in February 2020 alone as travelers are hesitant to travel to the country in fear of contracting coronavirus.
“We have to activate and stir domestic tourism as an immediate response to the closure of China, HK, Macau, Taiwan,” states Department of Tourism Undersecretary Arturo Boncato, in an article by Panay News.
Moreover, the Department of Tourism is open to the suggestion that government agencies should be encouraged to hold out of town meetings and seminars to domestic tourism players.
