Virus Compromises Boracay Reopening

After news broke that an employee from the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) tested positive for coronavirus (who had apparently stayed on the island prior to test results), health authorities are scrambling to locate, isolate, and monitor person who had close contact to the 26-year-old female firefighter.

In an article by the Inquirer, it was reported that the local government in Malay, Aklan confirmed that the BFP employee ‘partied’ on the island. Moreover, Acting Mayor Frolibar Bautista said that he will be filing cases against the BFP employee who violated quarantine protocols.

“This can be considered economic sabotage,” states Acting Mayor Frolibar Bautista.

It can be recalled that the island just reopened following three months of lockdown. It may also be recalled that the island reopened to tourists from Western Visayas only (this includes Aklan, Antique, Capiz, Guimaras, Iloilo, and Negros Occidental).

Facing the consequences. To date, the BFP employee is in an isolation center in Iloilo City. Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas, meanwhile, will be filing complaints against the person who violated the rules. Moreover, Treñas has placed the BFP Iloilo City and Regional Office under extreme lockdown for three days. Read more: Virus case spoils Boracay reopening, an article by the Inquirer.
