In an update, Yahoo Groups is said to shut down for good on December 15 this year. Verizon announced its decision last October 14 on the Yahoo Group site and in emails sent to Yahoo Group users. Moreover, Yahoo launched a FAQ page regarding this.
Why was the decision made?
Yahoo Groups has made the decision to shut down as of December 15. Yahoo Groups has seen a steady decline in usage over the last several years. Over that same period, the company witnessed unprecedented levels of engagement across properties as customers seek out premium, trustworthy content. While these decisions are never easy, the company must make difficult decisions regarding products that no longer fit long-term strategy as it hones its focus on other areas of the business.
Will this impact Yahoo mail accounts?
No, the only thing being decommissioned is Yahoo Groups (groups.yahoo.com) and emails sent from Yahoo Groups. Yahoo Mail will continue to function normally.
It may be recalled that Yahoo Groups was launched in 2001, allowing users to post messages, upload files and photos, as well as create polls and mailing lists. Apparently, the rise of social media has severely impacted this online platform, thus the closure.
Verizon has long been transitioning its users out of the platform, announcing in 2019 that users will no longer be able to create new content after October 21 and all data will be deleted by December 14, and the website inaccessible by December 15.
I didn’t get this news elsewhere yet except here. But at least the e-mail will be retained. Let me share this.
Thank you for commenting sir. This has been circulating online this week.
